Happy Happy New Year!
Everyone likes to set New Year resolutions. I normally don’t like to make them, but from time to time I’ve been known to succumb to peer pressure – so this year I’m making one. I’ve decided my resolution this year should be to… drink more wine. Done, easy. I’m so going to overachieve on my resolution this year! But, in the spirit of ‘wine discovery’, I’ve also resolved to give my overachieving wine consumption some direction – I’ve set the goal to reach ‘Century Club’ status by the end of 2016.
What is the Century Club you might ask? It’s a club for people who love wine plus a bit of adventure. You’re admitted into ‘the
club’ if you’ve tried at least 100 different grape varietals. The first time I heard about the Century Club a few months ago I thought to myself “I’ve had a lot of wine, so I’m sure I’ve got to be close.” After all, I haven’t just drank the usual Cab and Pinot. I love the somewhat unusual Nero D’Avola from Sicily, my husband is obsessed with Sémillon from Sauternes, and I’ve even had such unusual varietals as Vidal — which makes some Canadian Icewines. Then I finally went through the list last night and my final tally came to 32! 32!!! That’s really quite pathetic, if I do say so myself, and something I plan to rectify in 2016. But you have to start somewhere and this is my beginning.
I’ll update all of you on my progress along the way and if you have any suggestions on great wines with any of my missing grape varietals, feel free to pass them along. I have quite a few bottles to get through this year, and I’ll need all the help I can get!
If you’d like to join along, you can find out more information at The Wine Century Club. Tag @10KBottles on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook as you post your bottles and drink your way in to the club.
What’s your favorite uncommon grape variety?
