There was an article in the New York Times a few weeks ago comparing poll results between what the average American thought were healthy foods and drinks and what the average nutritionist thought were healthy food and drinks. While it had a lot of interesting ideas on the disconnect between the consumer’s view of food and the experts view of food, as well as the divergence among nutritionists on what is healthy, what caught my eye was not any of that. It was where wine (of course) fell on the spectrum of healthiness.

Orange-Juice-PlainFirst, let’s rely upon the experts’ view of wine – as they put wine at a higher level of health than the average American. According to the experts, wine is healthier than orange juice. Wow. I guess Resveratrol beats out Vitamin C, and fermented grape juice is healthier for you any day than non-fermented juice from the orange.

What else is wine more healthy than? Granola. Popcorn. Whole Milk. Steak. Should I keep going? Coconut oil. Kind bars. Slimfast shakes. Soda. Beer. Experts agree, wine is pretty darn good for you. And this is without even going into all the studies that address how people who drink live longer than people who don’t drink.

Coconut OilOkay, so wine may not be kale or spinach, but it is darn good for you and much better than most foods and drinks. As a parent of two small children, I almost feel bad that we give them orange juice every morning to be healthy, while I am forbidding them from having the much healthier juice – wine. But, if my husband tonight says he feels like some orange juice, I’ll tell him to put down that unhealthy drink, and raise a glass of wine with me – it’s for our health after all.
