One of the best things about writing a blog is that I get to pose any random question I feel like and then answer it. So today’s random question is – if I were to sit down and share a bottle of wine with Santa, what wine would it be?

What type of wine would Santa like? Share on X Wine_with_Santa-Santa Hat_Flickr_Susanne NilssonThe first question to ask is – what type of wine would Santa like? My husband thinks it would be a Canadian ice wine since Santa’s so close to the North Pole. But, my husband grew up Jewish and leaves the milk and cookies outside for Santa (because he thinks Santa comes through the front door rather than the chimney). So, I’m not going to rely heavily on his opinion for this one. Considering the size of Santa’s tummy, I’m going to guess that he spends many days snacking on sugary treats and desserts, so of course he’d go for a wine that’s basically dessert in a bottle. There are a number of various dessert wines out there, but my favorite go-to dessert wines are Sauternes and port.

After wine, the next thing that I love the most is food.  So the second question has to be – what will Santa and I be eating while we share this bottle of wine?  This is Santa we’re talking about, so it’s gotta be cookies. My children think Santa likes oatmeal raisin cookies because that’s what we make for him each year (what can I say, they’ve got a vegan grandmother, so oatmeal raisin cookies are our compromise). But I think we all know that Santa actually prefers chocolate chip cookies – big ol’ chunky, ooey, gooey chocolate chip cookies. So knowing that, hands down, we’ve got to go with a port.

Here are my suggestions of (domestic) ports to pop open the next time Santa’s heading over to your house.

Vincent Arroyo Petit Syrah Port $25.00 – Vincent Arroyo is a small winery out of Calistoga California, who produces a fantastic Petit Syrah Port. It’s a vintage style port so the fruit is from one year only and the wine barrel ages for 22 months. The wine has lots of fruit and is very drinkable now. But, if you can cellar it for a few years, it develops into a port that is rich and complex.

Bremer Family Winery Ruby Port $50.00 – The Bremer Family Winery is located on the slopes of Howell Mountain in Napa, not far from the town of St. Helena. Bremer is currently selling its ’07 ports and they’re delicate and supple on the palate.  It’s desert in a bottle and then some.

So if anyone reading this personally knows Santa, let him know that I’ve got fresh baked, big ol’ chunky, ooey, gooey chocolate chip cookies and some port from Vincent Arroyo or Bremer waiting for him.
